What is an Oxygen Concentrator and how does it work?

Well, the clue is in the name.

These machines suck in normal air – which has roughly 80 % nitrogen and 20% oxygen and force it through a special sieve.
They are used on patients who have poor lung function as the higher concentration of oxygen allows the patient to get sufficient oxygen.
So, how exactly does an oxygen concentrator work?

From there the sieves hold onto the nitrogen until they are saturated. Most machines have a 6000-8000 hour life span. After this time, the sieves need to be replaced.
Oxygen concentrators are not only convenient, but they are also affordable and do not need to be refilled on a regular basis. These factors make this medical device a commonly used item for oxygen therapy at home as well as on patients in hospital.
